چکیده

Today computer models and computer simulations of the musculoskeletal system are widely used to study the mechanisms behind human gait and its disorders. The common way of creating musculoskeletal models is to use a generic musculoskeletal model based on data derived from anatomical and biomechanical studies of cadaverous specimens. To adapt this generic model to a specific subject, the usual approach is to scale it. This scaling has been reported to introduce several errors because it does not always account for subject-specific anatomical differences. As a result, a novel semi-automatic workflow is proposed that creates subject-specific musculoskeletal models from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) datasets and motion capture data. Based on subject-specific medical data and a model-based automatic segmentation approach, an accurate modeling of the anatomy can be produced while avoiding the scaling operation. This anatomical model coupled with motion capture data, joint kinematics information and muscle-tendons actuators is finally used to create a subject-specific musculoskeletal model. 1 University of Geneva, MIRALab [email protected] 2 Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Virtual Reality Laboratory [email protected] 3 INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, Asclepios Research Team [email protected] 4 Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Virtual Reality Laboratory [email protected] 5 INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, Asclepios Research Team [email protected] 6 University of Geneva, MIRALab [email protected] 4 Jérôme Schmid , Anders Sandholm , François Chung , Daniel Thalmann , Hervé Delingette and Nadia Magnenat-Thalmann

From MRI to anatomical simulation of the hip joint

This paper describes a methodology for the simulation of musculoskeletal disorders. Our clinical study is related to osteoarthritis of the hip, a pathogenesis possibly due to impingements. These bone collisions lead to abnormal joint mechanics which is characterized by contact pressure and stress distribution upon the joint cartilages. The proposed methodology combines different approaches from...

Optimizing the actuation of musculoskeletal model by genetic algorithm to simulate the vertical jump

In human body movement simulation such as vertical jump by a forward dynamic model, optimal control theories must be used. In the recent years, new methods were created for solving optimization problems which they were adopted from animal behaviors and environment events such as Genetic algorithm, Particle swarm and Imperialism competitive. In this work, the skeletal model was constructed by Ne...

Dynamics kin deformation based on biomechanical modeling

Animating the human body with realistic skin deformation is a big challenge. Current approaches rely on approximations by using simple techniques such as skinning. We propose an approach based on the simulation of the deformation of the underlying musculoskeletal model. Our approach is based on subject-specific models that are constructed from medical images, 3D body scanner data and motion cap...

Visual Motion Capturing for Kinematic Model Estimation of a Humanoid Robot

Controlling a tendon-driven robot like the humanoid Ecce is a difficult task, even more so when its kinematics and its pose are not known precisely. In this paper, we present a visual motion capture system to allow both real-time measurements of robot joint angles and model estimation of its kinematics. Unlike other humanoid robots, Ecce (see Fig. 1A) is completely molded by hand and its joints...

Dynamic Biomechanical Simulation for Identifying Risk Factors for Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders during Construction Tasks

We propose a dynamic biomechanical simulation method that uses motion capture to evaluate the risk of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs). Statistics show that WMSDs accounted for 33% of all non-fatal occupational injuries and illness in construction in 2009, and were a leading cause of temporary and permanent disability. Present methods rely largely on self-reports from workers, obs...
